The Iranian leadership frequently expresses strong hostility to Israel's existence. On the other hand, Israel sees Iran as a major regional rival and has opposed Iran's nuclear program outspokenly, calling for diplomatic pressure and international sanctions. Deep-seated hostility and competing interests continue to characterize the relationship between these two Middle Eastern heavyweights, notwithstanding sporadic diplomatic attempts, including indirect discussions aided by other countries.
